If you’ve ever wondered if your cat knows they’re loved, a feline behavior expert has shared a few ways to make sure they do.
In a video posted on her TikTok profile, Cat the Vet, a veterinarian from the UK, began by explaining that giving your cat space and allowing them to be in control of interactions is crucial for them to know they’re respected by you.
“Our cats are affectionate, but they like to do things on their own terms and prefer to be in control. So, petting, yes, being together, definitely, but big hugs? Maybe not so much,” she explained.
It may seem like an act of love to leave a large amount of food in your cat’s bowl to let them know there’s plenty of food available, but this could backfire.
“Leaving a big bowl of food exposed can encourage overeating, which can lead to all kinds of health issues like obesity and arthritis,” she pointed out.
“What’s better and really fits with our cat’s natural eating preferences is to offer them small amounts of food regularly, or feed them with puzzle balls or treat balls, which really stimulate and mimic our cat’s natural hunting behavior.”
Finally, she explained that felines also have specific preferences when it comes to their litter box. “They like to be able to see around them when they go to the bathroom, because remember, they are vulnerable when they do.”
“They like a large, nice bathroom with a view. Make sure their litter box is at least one and a half times their length and is filled with litter. And make sure to clean it regularly, because scooping poop is really an act of true love,” the veterinarian concluded.
